The Guppies Program, designed specifically for children in kindergarten and within the early developmental stages, caters to ages 1 through 5. Its primary objective is to enhance accessibility to volleyball - an often overlooked sport in Australia—to the younger generation.

Beyond simply introducing the joys of volleyball, the program delves deeper, instilling essential values of teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship in its participants. Through engaging activities and interactive sessions, children not only experience the thrill of the game but also cultivate fundamental life skills that will benefit them both on and off the court.

The Guppies Program operates in an incursion format, conducted directly within Kindergartens and Early Learning Centres. Our team of qualified coaches visits for sessions lasting up to an hour, dedicated to guiding children in acquiring new skills, enhancing social engagement and most importantly, having fun!

These sessions unfold over several weeks, providing ample time for the children to establish meaningful relationships with our staff. This extended interaction not only fosters a supportive learning environment but also presents the youngsters with positive role models to admire and interact with throughout the program's duration.

how does it work?

child development in volleyball

gross motor skills

Volleyball offers a dynamic environment for children to enhance their gross motor skills. Through actions like throwing the ball over the net or catching a ball that has come to them, they refine hand-eye coordination, balance, and agility. By navigating the court, they develop spatial awareness, while the strength needed for throwing/hitting the ball builds muscle power. Quick reactions and precise timing are honed as they respond to the ball's movements.

Communication with teammates fosters social skills, and the sustained activity of the game improves endurance. Overall, volleyball provides a holistic approach to gross motor skill development in children.

social skills

Volleyball is not just about hitting a ball over a net; it's about teamwork, communication, and collaboration. When children play volleyball, they learn to work together towards a common goal, whether it's winning a game or simply improving as a team. Through interaction with teammates and opponents, children develop crucial social skills such as cooperation, empathy, and sportsmanship. They learn to respect rules, resolve conflicts, and celebrate successes together.

emotional skills

Volleyball offers numerous opportunities for children to develop their emotional skills in a supportive and engaging environment. When playing volleyball, children experience a range of emotions, from excitement and joy during successful plays to frustration or disappointment after mistakes.

Through volleyball, children learn resilience by confronting setbacks like missed throws or lost points, fostering a tenacity that extends beyond the court. Whilst also learning to support their teammates by cheering and smiling when they can throw a ball over the net.
